Overview
In the last decade, numerous research studies have been published evidencing praxis deficits and different motor learning profiles in persons with autism. This course reviews this research and relates it to the behavioral observations that comprise the autism spectrum diagnosis and key ingredients of current therapeutic interventions- and then extends this information to real world therapeutic challenges.
- Identify six core findings in dyspraxia research in persons with autism.
- Identify four key neural pathways associated with praxis findings.
- Integrate praxis findings with key ingredients of current therapeutic interventions for persons with autism.
- Interpret autistic behavior through the lens of praxis findings.
- Discuss rationale for therapeutic supports given motor and brain connectivity differences in persons with autism.
- Given a specific therapeutic challenge, participants will identify three or more strategies to optimize cognitive motor success.
Course Instructor
2.5 Hours
This course Introduces the student to the recent research on motor planning, dyspraxia and the specific profile of developmental dyspraxia seen in autism. The course also introduces the supports to use in home, therapy and educational settings. There is some overlap with the “how to” videos, but this course is laid out in a more structured format.
6 hours
For the 6 hour credit option, students will complete the two hour video, and read three of the articles listed, summarize in a one page document, and submit to Kathleen.
