From the first time her autistic son typed with her in the early 1990s, Kathleen puzzled over the phenomenon of supported typing for people with autism.   This book is a culmination of that journey – from her work as a physical therapist starting a therapy intensive/respite program for children with autism and their families to her work in graduate school focusing on the different brain connectivity that underlies the sensory processing and cognitive motor differences we see in autism.

Kathleen takes us along this journey using a fictional character – Jake.  Five year old Jake has autism, is unable to speak words and is just starting on his “typing communication” journey.  Jake takes us with him on this journey as he not only becomes independent in his typed communication, but solves a mystery and saves a friend at the same time.

At the same time Kathleen takes us on a journey unraveling some of the deep questions raised with supported typing and provides sound neurological answers to these questions.  Questions like: How could a child learn to read without formal teaching?  Or, why is there such a profound potential for influence using this technique?

Supported typing has been life-changing for many people with autism and their families, yet supported typing is not accepted in schools or many therapy clinics and research funding is limited.  Kathleen and Jake believe this is due in large part to a lack of understanding and hope this will shed some light on the topic.
